Philadelphia

Introduction

Philadelphia is known to the locals as "Philly". This is a tremendous east coast destination for your American city break. The city is located in south eastern Pennsylvania and is the fifth largest city in the USA. The city was founded by the Quakers and has a strong historical interest based on its role in the Civil War and in the writing of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. If history is not your interest you can be sure of much more to see and do!



Getting there

Air: Philadelphia International Airport(PHL) is close to the city and is served by numerous airlines. It's about 20 mins to the city via the R1 line.

Other options by air include Newark in New Jersey or Baltimore-Washington Airport. From these airports you can connect to Philly via Amtrak in around 60 - 90 minutes.

What to See and Do

Philadelphia's numerous attractions include the following:

Philadelphia Museum of Art: As well as viewing the Art you can re-live that Rocky moment by running up the steps in front of the museum. Inside you will find a huge art collection. Free entry on Sundays.

Academy of Natural Sciences: This is a museum of natural history and includes dinosaur exhibits as well as hands on displays for the kids. There is also a nature centre with live animals.

Once Upon A Nation: See Philadelphia's historic district with colonial-themed tour guides and extras. Once Upon A Nation describes the Philadelphia of the 18th Century and the city's revolutionary heritage.

Philadelphia in the Movies Film Tour: The city is a well known Hollywood star and has seen the making of many films over the years including Rocky, Trading Places, Philadelphia and The Sixth Sense. This bus tour will take you round many of the locations.

Getting Around

Foot: Philly is one of the best cities in the USA to get around by foot. "Walk! Philadelphia" signs cover the CBD and point you in the correct direction. The signs cover all the main attractions as well as places to eat and other tourist info.

Subway: There are two subway lines called the Orange Line and Blue Line. In addition the PATCO Hi-Speed Line connects Philly with New Jersey.
